Grease/Waste Management

The grease management section of the Engineering Department inspects more than 962 grease traps every quarter.  Grease is the number one cause of sewer overflows, so proper inspection of these traps helps alleviate the negative impact of grease on the system.  The grease management section of the MWA Engineering Department also receives reports from grease haulers and keeps statistics on the grease management program.

Residential customers can help prevent sewer spills and overflows by properly disposing of grease within their households.  Rather than pour grease down the drain, potentially clogging and damaging home plumbing and MWA sewer lines, let grease cool and pour it into a sealed container for disposal in the trash.  The MWA has a limited supply of grease can covers to make this disposal of potentially harmful household grease easier for residential customers.  To receive a free, reusable grease can cover, ask for one at the customer service counter of the MWA headquarters on Second Street.

Grease Trap Pumping/Service

The MWA has a list of grease trap pumping companies or services to assist customers, especially commercial customers such as restaurants, grocery stores, and other food establishments.

Waste Haulers

The MWA can also provide references of solid waste or hazardous waste haulers to assist customers with proper disposal of those materials that could be harmful to the MWA sewer system and/or our environment if handled or disposed of improperly.

Finally, for those MWA water customers who may be on septic systems, the MWA also can provide a list of contacts for professionals and companies who provide septic tank maintenance and service.  Properly maintaining a septic tank or system helps to protect our environment and the water quality at the MWA.
